Why AI-Built Websites All Look the Same

Key Takeaways

  • Nearly every AI-built website shares the same bones. Same hero section, same rounded buttons, same three feature boxes, because AI tools build from an average of everything they’ve seen.
  • The look isn’t the real problem. Weak copy, no clear buying pathway, poor search visibility, and no unique positioning show up in the same sites, again and again.
  • Many AI tools load content through JavaScript only. That can make a site nearly invisible to Google and AI answer engines, even when it looks polished to a visitor.
  • The step almost every AI tool skips is deciding how you look on purpose. A roadmap and a mood board, built before a single page goes to design.
  • A real mood board is a stack of decisions, not a Pinterest board. One landscaping client saw call volume triple and close rates double after theirs went live.

Building a website used to cost a fortune. Now you can describe one to an AI tool and have it built by lunch, almost for free. So why do nearly all of them look the same?

You’ve seen it: the same hero section, the same rounded buttons, the same three feature boxes, the same smooth gradients. Different logo, identical bones.

I’m Greg Merrilees, founder of Studio1 Design. Over the years, my team and I have worked on more than 2,000 websites and brands for entrepreneurs, global companies, and names like Sylvester Stallone and Frank Oz, the original voice of Yoda. And in every one of those projects, we’ve found the exact same things missing whenever a site gets built without one specific step first.

Here’s the problem nobody’s talking about with AI-built, or “vibecoded,” websites, and it isn’t just the look. In this article, I’ll break down why the sameness happens, the one step almost every AI tool skips, and the question that tells you whether any designer, or any tool, is about to leave you invisible.

The Real Problem Isn’t the Look

Sure, the look-and-feel sameness is a problem. But the bigger issue is that these sites often aren’t attracting traffic or converting the traffic they do get into leads. Pull one of these sites apart and the same things are missing, again and again.

  • Generic design and weak copy
  • No clear pathway for someone who’s actually ready to buy
  • Poor search rankings
  • Security holes and a site that doesn’t scale as you grow
  • No unique brand positioning, nothing that tells a visitor why you, and not the other 12 tabs they’ve got open

To be clear, this isn’t only an AI-builder problem. Plenty of human-designed websites are missing these same things. And none of it is really the tools’ fault. It’s a step the tools skip, the same step almost every strong brand has always started with. Miss it, and you ship fast, but you blend into the crowd and wonder why nobody’s calling you.

Here’s why this matters more now than it did even a year ago. When everyone can generate a decent-looking website in an afternoon, “decent” is just the new average. A prospect, or increasingly an AI comparing you to a dozen rivals in seconds, skips right past average. The thing that makes you the obvious choice was never how the site got built. It was what got decided before the building even started.

Why AI Tools Create Average, Not Original, Websites

Once you see this, you can’t unsee it. An AI builder starts from a template and a giant pile of other websites. It gives you the average of everything it has seen. By definition, that’s the middle of the road, smooth, safe, and identical to the next person who typed in a similar prompt. That next person could be one of your competitors.

Trying to fix this by looking at competitors for inspiration usually makes it worse. You copy the look that’s already winning in your industry, and now you have a slightly weaker version of it. Originality was your one real edge, and you’ve just traded it away to blend in.

That’s only half the problem. A lot of AI and vibe-coding tools build sites so that content loads through JavaScript only. That sounds technical, but really it just means search engines and the AI tools people now use to research businesses- Google, ChatGPT, Perplexity – can look at your page and see almost nothing. Nothing they can confidently read, cite, or recommend.

So you haven’t just built a site that looks like everybody else’s; you’ve built one that Google and AI search tools genuinely struggle to see at all. Sit with that for a second: you can have a site that looks perfectly professional to a human and be effectively invisible to the exact people and AI systems searching for what you sell. Not ranking badly, just not there.

To be fair, not every AI builder does this, and it’s fixable. But it’s the default, and defaults are what cost people the most. This isn’t only a startup problem either. The more established you are, the more it stings. You’ve got the reputation, the results, and the track record, and you’re still handing a designer, or a tool, good money, waiting weeks, and hoping what comes back finally looks the part. In my book, Next Level Website Design, I call that a leap of faith. And whether a human or an AI is doing the building, hope isn’t a brand strategy.

The Step Every AI Tool Skips

The fix isn’t a better tool or a better prompt. It’s deciding how you look on purpose, before anything gets built. That decision comes from two things AI tools have no way to give you on their own: a roadmap and a mood board.

The roadmap is the strategy; it unpacks who you actually are, who you’re for, and why you’re the right choice. That’s a topic worth its own deep dive, which we’ve covered in another video on our channel. For this article, let’s stay focused on the piece that makes you look like nobody else: the mood board.

What a Real Mood Board Actually Does

Say “mood board” and half the room pictures a Pinterest collage. That’s not what we do at Studio1; pretty images with no point are exactly the trap. Most mood boards are decoration. A real one is built to do a job: make you look distinctively different, and turn that distinctiveness into a website that attracts leads and converts them into clients.

Here’s what most people miss: a mood board isn’t a mood. It’s a stack of decisions. And every decision in it has to line up with three things.

  • Who you are and how much you charge.
  • What you actually offer.
  • How you’re different from your competitors.

Get that alignment wrong, and even a beautiful brand can work against you. Put a premium price behind a cheap, busy, brightly colored look, and people quietly decide you’re not the premium choice they’d hoped for, and they leave without saying a word. Flip it: an expensive-looking brand sitting on a budget offer makes people assume you’re out of their reach, so they leave too. Your visuals set the price expectation before your price ever does.

So the look has to fit your market, your price point, and your offer. Then it has to do one more thing an AI tool will never do for you on its own: go against the grain of your category, on purpose. Every industry drifts into a sea of sameness, and AI is making that drift worse, everybody reaching for the same corporate blue, the same stock imagery, the word “excellence” on every homepage. When you look like everyone else, people can’t tell you apart, so they default to deciding on price. Our job is to find exactly where your rivals zag, so you can deliberately zig, not different for the sake of it, but different in a way your ideal client actually cares about.

How We Build Brand Direction Before a Single Page Is Designed

This is the part of the process we own directly. It starts with a strategy session, where we figure out what your business does, who it serves, who your competitors are, how you’re different, and what you want people to feel when they land on your site. Then we research, going deep into your market to find the gap nobody’s standing in.

Only then does our brand director build the mood board itself:

  • A color palette with a deliberate contrast color reserved for your call-to-action button, so it doesn’t blend in and get ignored.
  • Typography chosen for readability across every device, using web-safe fonts.
  • A photography direction so your imagery looks like you and your team, not generic stock.
  • Custom icons and textures so your brand is instantly recognisable as yours.
  • Sample layouts so you can see exactly what you’re going to get before we design a single page.

You approve the direction first. Only then do we start on the design. That sounds good in theory, but the real question is whether it moves the needle, or just makes the brand prettier.

A Real Example: Ware Landscaping

Ware Landscaping is a premium landscaping and drainage company serving Naperville and Chicago, Illinois, founded by Mike Ware and backed by a 10-year guarantee. When Mike came to us, his business was getting plenty of traffic but very few quality leads. The site didn’t reflect how good the work actually was, prospects arrived with no confidence in the brand and backed out the moment they heard premium pricing.

Before a single page was designed, we built the mood board, and every choice traced back to those same three things, their market (homeowners who care about quality), their price point, and their offer (the 10-year guarantee, a genuine differentiator we leaned into hard). The look had to feel high-end without being cluttered or over the top, so we went with earthy, premium tones that signal reliability and professionalism. For photography, we ditched stock entirely, real before-and-after project photos, and even Mike’s own family on the About page, to give the brand personality and show the real, approachable people behind the business.

  • Monthly call volume reached 3X what it was before the redesign.
  • Lead-to-client close rate doubled (2X).
  • Average project value increased as better-qualified prospects entered the pipeline.

“After the new website design went live, I’ve been looking at the new leads, and something remarkable is happening: we’re booking consultations with qualified prospects who already understand our value proposition when they call. Our close rate has nearly doubled.” — Mike Ware, WareLandscaping.com

Every business is different. Results depend on market conditions, traffic levels, audience readiness, and many factors beyond website design and brand positioning. This example is shared to illustrate what a connected, brand-led approach can produce, not as a suggestion that specific outcomes are typical or repeatable.

Same company, same guarantee, the brand finally matched the quality of the work. That’s the whole game. But even a great direction still has to survive the build, which brings us to where AI actually helps.

Where AI Fits In (And Where It Doesn’t)

If AI-built sites are part of the problem, what are we doing with AI? We use it heavily, but there’s a line, and it matters. The strategy is human. The roadmap is human. The mood board is human. AI helps us move faster through the parts of the process where speed is genuinely useful, and it’s taken a process that used to run 3 to 4 months down to about 4 weeks, without handing the quality decisions to a machine.

From there, AI assists our team with hand-coding your site, rather than shipping directly with whatever an AI tool spits out. That means it’s light, it loads fast, and the content is actually present on the page for Google and AI tools to read, not buried behind JavaScript. We still add the meta titles, page descriptions, and internal linking your site needs to build search authority. And if you already have a website, we bring your existing blog posts, podcast, key pages, and full URL structure across, to protect the search value you’ve spent years building, instead of handing it over to an AI rebuild to quietly lose on launch day.

Same speed everyone’s chasing. None of the invisibility.

Once you’re live, everything from the mood board becomes your brand style guide, so every future asset, social graphics, ads, sales pages, stays on brand. That matters more than it sounds, because assets that come from the same mood board can’t tell a different story. Your brand, your website, and your content all point a prospect to the same conclusion: that you’re the right choice. That’s the thing a template or a rushed prompt can never give you, not a prettier page, but a brand that holds together.

The One-Question Litmus Test

Whether you’re hiring a designer or choosing a tool, ask this one question before anything gets built: “Will you show me the visual direction made specifically for me?”

If the answer is no, walk away. You’re about to get a template, a guess, a blend of the whole industry. In this fast-moving AI era, you need an edge, a way to stand out in your market, to zig where your rivals are zagging.

If you’re a founder, coach, consultant, author, content creator, or service business that cares about results, but your brand doesn’t yet make you the obvious choice, or if you’re pulling in price shoppers instead of the clients your reputation deserves, that’s exactly the leak Studio1 closes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I still need a mood board if I’m using an AI website builder? Yes, arguably more than ever. AI builders generate from an average of every site they’ve seen, so without a deliberate visual direction tied to your positioning, price point, and offer, you’re likely to end up looking like your competitors. A mood board is what turns a generic AI build into something that’s unmistakably yours.

What’s the difference between a mood board and a brand style guide? A mood board sets the direction before design starts: the color palette, typography, photography style, and overall feel, approved before a single page is built. Once your site is live, that same direction becomes your ongoing brand style guide, so every future asset stays consistent with it.

Can a JavaScript-heavy AI-built website really hurt my SEO? It can. When content only loads through JavaScript, search engines and AI answer tools like ChatGPT or Perplexity can struggle to read and index it properly. Your site can look completely professional to a visitor while being nearly invisible in search and AI-driven discovery, which defeats the purpose of having a website at all.

How long does Studio1’s strategy and mood board process take? Combining AI-assisted workflows with our human-led strategy, roadmap, and mood board process, we’ve brought what used to take 3 to 4 months down to around 4 weeks, without compromising on the quality of the strategic thinking behind it.

Do I need a full rebrand, or can Studio1 work with what I already have? Not necessarily. If you already have a website, we bring your existing blog content, podcast, key pages, and URL structure across during the rebuild, so you don’t lose the search value you’ve already built. The mood board process is about giving your existing brand a clear, deliberate direction, not throwing everything out and starting over.

Your Next Move

AI hasn’t made building a website harder; if anything, it’s made average easier than ever to get. Which is exactly why average no longer cuts it. The businesses that stand out aren’t the ones with the fanciest tool. They’re the ones who decided how they wanted to look, on purpose, before a single page was built.

If your website, brand, and content have drifted apart, or you’re pulling in price-shoppers instead of the clients your reputation deserves, that’s a positioning problem, and it’s fixable.
